Richard Jackson Crocker Art Talk
What is Art
And who is Richard Jackson.
The truth is Ladies and Gentlemen, in some ways this guy was pretty cool. Funny, clever, witty...
The truth is, I think he is a pretty unhappy albeit somewhat prolific, successful, recognized and funded artist.
Some of his work I really liked.
Some of it I really didn't.
(Honestly this piece and a # of is pieces make me feel sick to my stomach)
(Honestly I don't even really want to see them)
(Really a lot of lude stuff)
In his talk there were some very good quotes.
"I made it all (10,000 Clocks) it's a piece about time. How you spend your time".
I liked this part a lot. It made me immediately think about how I spend my time...
How do you like to spend your time?
He was honestly quite intelligent, and also it was apparent to me that he was quite displeased with him self. In fact he reminds me of a dictator from WWII who hated himself and therefore scapegoated and persecuted the masses of whom he saw within his own disdainful reflection. For example, he was quite out spoken against minimalism and minimalist artist. And at the same time he was consistently creating large scale minimalist works.
At the end of his talk he was talking about contemporary artist and his disdain for them, and at the same time he himself is a contemporary artist. (I was sitting next to Diana Daniels in the audience and she confirmed this).
And he also expressed his disdain for Art History and Art Historians, many of whom are the reason I was even there. Honestly I felt defensive for my Awesome teacher who was sitting next to me that this bitter old and in many ways, to me, disgusting artist was ripping on.
I kind of wanted to yell out "YOU SUCK WEIRDO!!!"
LOL, but instead I just remember the look on my teachers face when he was ripping on her lifes work, and it made me sad to witness at first hand the backlash of projected self loathing cynicism. It also gave me more compassion and respect for all the hard work that Art Historians do in this world. I have learned a Lot from y'all in my time here at Sac State and it has absolutely changed me as an artist and as a human being. I know know that as an artist and a human being I want to spread a different and more excellent message than the one largely I was getting from Richard Jackson.
In the end my Artistic friends and colleges and teachers and everyone who was there left. I saw many students who Elane and Diana and Bob and Andrew had helped too see this expensive artist talk. We walked around his gallery and were impressed and unimpressed by
What is Art
and who is Richard Jackson.
